# The Moda Center Deal: Where Portland Drew the Line

**August 27, 2026** · Tellagence

In September, the Portland City Council approved $120 million toward Moda Center renovations. The money comes with a condition: the Trail Blazers sign a lease to stay in Portland through 2050.

We pulled 12.4K social mentions from May 1 to October 6, 2026, across TikTok, Instagram, X, and local news comment sections like OregonLive, to see how Portlanders took it. (Reddit wasn't part of this pull.)

### TL;DR — The Quick Catch-Up

**What Happened:** The city approved $120 million for arena upgrades, the first piece of a $586 million package, in exchange for a lease through 2050.

**Why It Spread:** Owner Tom Dundon's refusal to chip in for the renovation turned a lease vote into a fight about who pays.

**The Friction:** Talk about the renovation and lease ran -28% net. That's a sharp drop from the +19% across the whole conversation.

**The Tellagence Takeaway:** Portland isn't worried about losing the team anymore. It's worried about what the team is costing.

### What the Data Showed

**1. The anger is aimed at the owner**

Nobody's arguing against fixing up the arena. The frustration traces back to one detail: Dundon said he wouldn't contribute to the upgrades.

That's what pulled the renovation and lease conversation down to -28% net. People are fine with civic investment. They don't want to carry it alone.

**What it means:** the reputational risk sits with ownership, not the players or the building.

**2. NBA valuations made the ask look worse**

Fans kept pointing to the Lakers' record $12.5 billion sale. If franchises are worth that much, the logic goes, why is the public paying for the arena?

And while the vote was for $120 million, people talked about the full $586 million package from the state, county, and city. Some tied it to rising grocery prices and SNAP cuts in Oregon.

**What it means:** national sports business headlines are shaping a local funding debate. Shrinking the number to the city's share isn't working.

**3. The 2050 lease swapped one worry for another**

The lease condition calmed fears that the Blazers would leave. It didn't produce much gratitude. The worry moved from the team leaving to the terms of the deal: rent, taxes, and who controls the upgrades.

People know this vote opened negotiations rather than closing them, and they're watching the fine print.

**What it means:** every new lease detail is likely to set off another round of scrutiny.

**4. Fans still love the team, and the building**

Outside the funding fight, things look cheerful. Fans built hypothetical rosters around Damian Lillard and Ja Morant (+25% net), and the 2026-27 schedule release landed well.

The Moda Center as a venue does fine too. Concert talk around Daniel Caesar and Tyler Childers ran +43% net.

**What it means:** Portlanders can resent the lease and still cheer for the jersey. The arena's life beyond basketball is the strongest case for fixing it.

### The Discover Difference

Picture a keyword dashboard on this one. It sees 12.4K mentions and +19% net sentiment, and it probably reports a healthy fan base that's fine with the deal.

Discover's clustering separated the pieces. Roster talk and concerts carried the positive numbers, while the renovation and lease conversation sat at -28%. It also showed what wasn't there: the local "save the team" coalitions and #WeAreRipCity didn't register as a cluster at all.

### Your Move.

If you're a team, a city, or a sponsor in a stadium funding fight, here are three ways to play it:

**Option A: Track the Owner Separately**

- **The play:** Measure sentiment toward ownership apart from the team, so lease anger doesn't get mistaken for fading fandom.
- **The trade-off:** More reporting work, and two numbers to explain instead of one.

**Option B: Lead With the Building**

- **The play:** Make the renovation case about concerts, events, and the arena's role in Portland's cultural life.
- **The trade-off:** It sidesteps the question people are actually asking: why isn't the owner paying?

**Option C: Skip the Corporate Cheerleading**

- **The play:** Let the financial terms speak for themselves instead of leaning on partner-led "save the team" campaigns.
- **The trade-off:** Gives up a megaphone, though the data says nobody was listening to it.
