# How Megan Thee Stallion Made Nike an Afterthought at Gymshark

Megan Thee Stallion left a five-year Nike deal this fall and signed with Gymshark. The brand introduced her with a campaign called "Megan Does Gym," then dropped her first piece, Thee Red Shorts, on October 22.

We pulled 3.2K mentions from August 25 to October 25, 2026, across X, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, news, and blogs in the U.S., U.K., France, Canada, and Mexico. The window covers the two weeks before launch, the launch video, and the first drop.

### TL;DR — The Quick Catch-Up

**What Happened:** Gymshark launched Megan Thee Stallion as its newest athlete and sold her shorts fast. Conversation peaked on October 13 with 862 mentions in a single day, about 27% of everything we collected.

**Why It Spread:** The campaign sounds like her. Fans repeated the "Real hot girl sh\*t takes work" line as their own slang and went straight to asking about restock dates. Net sentiment landed at +48%.

**The Friction:** The pushback skipped Megan and went after Gymshark. A vocal group questioned the brand's track record with Black consumers and whether the signing reflects a real change.

**The Tellagence Takeaway:** Nike showed up in just 39 of 3.2K mentions. The partnership that has to prove itself here is Gymshark's, and the athlete is already accepted.

### What the Data Showed

1. **Nike barely came up.**

The brief expected some confusion about her sudden exit from Nike. It never showed. Nike appears in 39 mentions across the whole conversation, and nobody was writing think pieces about brand loyalty.

Fans treated the move as an upgrade that needed no explanation. That gives Gymshark a clean slate to market her as its own athlete from day one, without positioning anything against her past work.
2. **Fans went straight to the checkout.**

The Megan Thee Stallion Partnership grouping led with 1.5K mentions at +73% net. Most of it was about the launch video, her look, and the race to buy what she wore.

People complained the shorts sold out too fast, asked when they'd be back, and tagged friends to plan purchases for the October 22 drop. Admiration turned into a shopping list almost immediately. Overseas, French fans said the signing was nowhere on their bingo card, which tells you how far it traveled.
3. **The criticism was about Gymshark's history.**

The Stallion Gymshark Dynamics grouping had 784 mentions and the lowest net sentiment, +17%, with 181 negative mentions. One widely shared critique called the deal a lazy attempt to win back Black consumers' dollars from a brand that was never built for them.

Nobody in that group was doubting Megan's fitness credentials. A smaller set of traditional lifters wondered how a rapper fits Gymshark's original identity, and her fans defended her quickly when outside negativity about her body showed up.
4. **Two audiences shared one feed without colliding.**

The Winter Fitness Drive grouping, 897 mentions at +36% net, belonged to Gymshark's core base. Lifters talked about the "winter arc" and Sam Sulek's same-day drop, while longtime female customers compared Softsense and ButterSmooth fabrics.

These groups rarely crossed into each other's tags. The one overlap was low-impact fitness: Pilates came up 44 times, usually next to Softsense excitement. That's the natural bridge if Gymshark wants first-time buyers to stick around. (Megan had a busy month, too. She also performed at the [Victoria's Secret Fashion Show](https://tellagence.ai/pulse-feed/victorias-secret-fashion-show-2026-data).)

### The Discover Difference

A keyword tool tracking "Megan Thee Stallion," "Gymshark," and "Nike" would probably have reported a positive celebrity swap and moved on. It might even have framed the Nike exit as the story, since that's what everyone expected going in.

Discover's clustering pulled the hype, the core lifting conversation, and the critique into separate groupings. That's how the data showed the skepticism was aimed at the brand's history, and that Gymshark's existing audience was running its own parallel conversation with no sign of conflict.

### Your Move

If you're signing a cultural star to a brand with a complicated past, here are three ways to play it.

**Option A: Sell Through the Hype**

The play: Shift spend from broad awareness video into restock alerts, waitlists, and direct purchase links while demand is hot.

The trade-off: Less budget for brand storytelling, and long stock-outs can turn excitement into resentment quickly.

**Option B: Answer the Inclusivity Question With the Calendar**

The play: Feature creators from Megan's community in everyday weekly content, beyond the marquee campaign, so the signing looks like a commitment.

The trade-off: It means engaging an uncomfortable history in public, and it has to last longer than a Q4 sales push.

**Option C: Use Pilates as the Bridge**

The play: Retarget first-time red-shorts buyers with Softsense and lifestyle fitness creative, the one place both audiences already meet.

The trade-off: Blending pop-culture tone with technical product copy is harder than it looks.
