# Why Hulu's Not Suitable for Work Reads as a Throwback

Not Suitable for Work, the Mindy Kaling-produced Hulu comedy, wrapped its first season with a loyal audience and an open question about Season 2.

We pulled 7.1K mentions from June 1 to July 7, 2026, across social, news, blogs, and forums. Positive mentions made up 45% and negative 13%, for roughly +32% net.

### TL;DR — The Quick Catch-Up

- **What Happened:** Hulu's workplace ensemble comedy finished Season 1, and fans started asking for more.
- **Why It Spread:** Viewers called it an easy, feel-good watch and compared it to Friends and New Girl.
- **The Friction:** A storyline about a food allergy drew sharp criticism for getting the medicine wrong.
- **The Tellagence Takeaway:** People like the show. They don't yet see it as their show.

### What the Data Showed

1. **Comfort is the draw.**

The biggest story in the data (1.1K mentions) was enthusiasm for the show's light tone and low stakes. Another 540 mentions said it captured millennial workplace life.
2. **Fans want Season 2.**

171 mentions were straight-up calls for renewal, and others dissected the finale's open threads. Smaller fan groups formed around a possible sapphic storyline (124 mentions) and the Abby and Kel romance (31).
3. **It reads as a throwback.**

Even the praise leaned on 1990s and 2000s sitcoms. And 568 mentions framed the show as the last chapter of Kaling's trilogy after Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls, which invites comparison and makes this one look like the safest of the three.

The report also measured it against FX's Adults, which viewers see as the more Gen Z-specific show. (We looked at [that conversation here](https://tellagence.ai/pulse-feed/fx-adults-season-2-audience-analysis).)
4. **The food allergy storyline is a real risk.**

A cluster of 109 mentions was 100% negative, led by the advocacy group FARE calling the storyline "disappointing and dangerous." The broader story around it ran 96% negative. Complaints about medical accuracy tend to stick harder than complaints about taste.

### The Discover Difference

A keyword tool would give you 7.1K mentions, a healthy positive score, and about 400 mentions about an Indian telecom company that happened to match the query. The allergy criticism would disappear into the average.

Discover filtered the noise and isolated the allergy cluster, so a 109-mention problem shows up as the 100% negative risk it is. It also separated casual comfort viewers from the smaller, more invested fan groups.

### Your Move

Heading into a Season 2 decision, the data supports three moves.

**Option A: Address the allergy feedback**

**The play:** Acknowledge the criticism publicly and consult groups like FARE on future health storylines.

**The trade-off:** It briefly puts a negative story back in the news.

**Option B: Sharpen the point of view**

**The play:** Bring more Gen Z writers into the room and market specific storylines instead of Friends comparisons.

**The trade-off:** Viewers who like the throwback feel may drift.

**Option C: Grow the ships**

**The play:** Give Abby and Kel and the sapphic storyline more room, and talk to those fans directly on social.

**The trade-off:** Plots aimed at small fan groups can feel inside-baseball to casual viewers.
