# Callaway's Ad Apology: Why It Didn't Land

**September 22, 2026** · Tellagence

On August 18, Callaway and Good Good Golf released a co-branded driver ad that showed a male golfer shoving a female golfer. Both brands pulled it, apologized, and pledged donations to domestic violence charities.

We pulled 71.5K social mentions from August 18 to August 31, 2026, to see how people reacted to the ad and to the apology.

### TL;DR — The Quick Catch-Up

**What Happened:** Callaway and Good Good pulled a driver ad that showed a man shoving a woman, then apologized and pledged $1 million to fight violence against women.

**Why It Spread:** People were outraged by the ad, and then asked how it got approved in the first place.

**The Friction:** Net sentiment landed at -47%. The apology drew fire from critics and from the ad's defenders.

**The Tellagence Takeaway:** People wanted answers about who signed off on the ad. An apology alone didn't give them that.

### What the Data Showed

**1. The apology read as damage control**

People called CEO Chip Brewer's apology late and forced, pointing out that it came only after the outcry peaked. The $1 million pledge got the same treatment.

Distrust ran deep enough that a theory spread claiming Callaway engineered the controversy to push down its own stock.

**What it means:** once people decide an apology is PR, repeating it makes things worse.

**2. The real question was who approved it**

People focused less on the actors and more on how the script made it through review, legal, and sign-off. Many tied that to male-dominated decision-making in golf marketing.

Good Good took heavy criticism too, with some calling for both CEOs to step down.

**What it means:** the damage is sticking to Callaway's leadership, not just the creative.

**3. A defensive camp turned it into a culture war**

Another group defended the ad as a harmless skit and called the reaction proof that people are too sensitive, citing old ads like Snickers' Betty White spot. Some attacked the apology as caving to DEI.

**What it means:** Callaway is taking heat from both directions, which leaves it few safe things to say.

**4. Retail felt it too**

Mentions pointed to reports that Costco stopped selling Callaway products, alongside boycott pledges. Talk about Callaway's Paradym and XR drivers, meanwhile, stayed net positive.

**What it means:** golfers who shop on performance are still in the game, but retail partners need reassurance.

### The Discover Difference

A keyword tool would see a spike of "Callaway" plus "apology" at -47% and file it as a bad week that will pass.

Discover's clustering showed what the anger was actually about: the approval chain, a lack of women in the room, and a second backlash against the apology itself. Those point to different fixes than a better-worded statement.

### Your Move.

If your brand is apologizing for an ad that shouldn't have run, here are three ways to play it:

**Option A: Show the Fix**

- **The play:** Publish what's changing in your creative review process, including who now has a say before anything ships.
- **The trade-off:** You have to admit a structural failure, not just a bad idea.

**Option B: Step Back From the Partner**

- **The play:** Pause co-branded work with Good Good until the creator group rebuilds its reputation.
- **The trade-off:** You lose access to its younger, digital-native audience.

**Option C: Brief Retail Partners Directly**

- **The play:** Have senior leaders walk key retailers through the remediation plan before more of them pull back.
- **The trade-off:** It pulls time and resources away from consumer marketing.
